(Ecofin Agency) – The Ethiopian government plans to build 16,173 resident houses in Addis Ababa at a total cost of $1.2 billion, The Reporter announced last week.

The project piloted by the Federal Housing Corporation (FHC), will be funded through subsidies, loans as well as the national budget. “The planned houses comprise of villas and various high-rise apartments ranging from 9 to 21-storeys,” said Girhum Birhanu, FHC Deputy Director.

About 50% of the houses planned will be dedicated to senior government officials and civil servants while the remaining should be used as rental houses for business services. Authorities said the villas are expected to be commissioned within 12 to 18 months, while the apartments should be ready in less than 36 months.

Let’s note that the project required around 26 ha of land, including State-owned lands and others planned to be provided by the Addis Ababa City Council.
