Djibouti: Foreign Ministers From Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia Meet to Discuss Cooperation

What Happened: The foreign ministers of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia are traveling to Djibouti to discuss, among other things, the Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Cooperation signed by the countries’ leaders on Sept. 5, Deutsche Welle reported Sept. 6. The three foreign ministers will also address the implementation of a newly approved Joint High-Level Committee.

Why It Matters: Ethiopia and Eritrea have pursued a rapid rapprochement thanks to Ethiopia’s reform-minded prime minister, Abiy Ahmed. This has led to increased cooperation in the region, which Djibouti has not yet taken part in.

Background: At a summit in July, the leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea formally ended their civil war and border conflict. Eritrea and Djibouti also have their own border dispute, which Djibouti has been pushing to resolve through a binding international arbitration.
